Who are we?
Tom Wadsworth
Designer & Director
I’m a design engineer who enjoys creating practical, innovative solutions for real-world problems. For more than 15 years I’ve worked across marine tech, mechanical design, robotics, and 3D visualisation — often taking projects from an initial idea all the way through to a working system in the field.
My work has taken me around the world. I spent a few years in Bermuda as a Divemaster and technician at BIOS, supporting research projects and keeping a wide range of subsea equipment running smoothly. I also volunteered in Madagascar with the conservation charity ReefDoctor, where I helped as a mechanic and Divemaster, supporting day-to-day technical needs in a very hands-on environment.
Now based in Plymouth, I run Design & Invent Ltd, where I design and build bespoke systems ranging from autonomous vessels and ROV tools to custom mechanisms and specialist prototypes. I enjoy the mix of engineering, problem-solving, and collaboration — and I’m always keen to work on projects that challenge me and make a real difference.
Design and Invent is made up of a small team of skilled and experienced people. We are based in Plymouth, UK and have been doing what we do for over 10 years, merging experiences such as:

These are some of the more important skill sets gained over the years. We are always learning new ways to do things and with this line of work we always will be. This is why we love to do what we do.
